The horses at Spirit Wind horse rescue in Southern Colorado got a new shelter just in time to weather the high winds the area saw over the past weekend. The Telluride Animal Foundation has been working closely with Spirit Wind funding various different needs from hay to veterinary care and then the need for shelter arose and TAF stepped in to fund it.

The weather in Southern Colorado is ripe with extremes, from cold, dry winters to hot, windy summers and this shelter will help the animals at Spirit Wind handle the conditions much more comfortably. Horses’ bodies don’t handle extreme temperatures a smaller animal might be better suited to contend with.

Spirit Wind is a small horse rescue group located in Delta County in Southern Colorado. They started with only two people and three horses to address the growing problem of unwanted and abused horses on the western slope. Now, they are a 501 c3 non profit organization that rescues and cares for abandoned, neglected and horses about to go to slaughter. They have been instrumental in taking in many horses in need that had no where else to turn.

For more information about Spirit Wind and the horses available for adoption visit them on petfinder at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/CO237.html and to ensure that more organizations receive much needed funds, shop and donate to the Telluride Thrift Store and the Telluride Animal Foundation.
